From royal guests and Hollywood legends to vintage adventures in the Black Forest, a stay at Baden-Baden's grandest hotel is a journey into timeless European elegance.
Living in Dubai, I have become accustomed to a particular kind of luxury. Gleaming skyscrapers, futuristic architecture and hotels where everything is bigger, brighter and unapologetically glamorous. Arriving at Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa in Baden-Baden, Germany, felt like stepping into another era, one of understated elegance, heritage and craftsmanship.
Dating back to 1872, this legendary hotel has welcomed an extraordinary guest list, from Prince Otto von Bismarck and King Chulalongkorn of Siam to Charlie Chaplin and Frank Sinatra. In 1975, Sinatra famously wrote, "Wherever you go, Brenner's is the best." More recently, Nelson Mandela, George Clooney and Bill Clinton have joined its illustrious list of visitors. Knowing these personalities had once walked the same corridors made my arrival all the more special.
Now part of Oetker Hotels, Brenners recently emerged from a two-year renovation, with its old-world glamour beautifully preserved by Countess Bergit Douglas, daughter of Rudolf-August Oetker.
Having overseen the interiors for over four decades, Countess Douglas guided the transformation through her studio, MM Design. Her signature aesthetic combines European elegance with English country-house charm, rich fabrics, intricate patterns, embroidery and antiques.
The 79 redesigned rooms and suites feature 27 individual design concepts, each with its own personality. Walking through the property, every corner feels like a carefully composed work of art, almost as though the Countess has invited you into her beautifully curated home.
Equally impressive is how seamlessly modern technology fits into the heritage aesthetic. Even the light switches retain an old-fashioned appearance while operating with contemporary efficiency. No glaring digital screens, just intuitive functionality discreetly concealed within timeless surroundings.
My room was an elegant sanctuary with a balcony overlooking the greenery. One delightful moment was enjoying traditional Black Forest cake with coffee, while realizing I was staying in the very region that gave this famous dessert its name!
But more surprises awaited. One morning, the hotel's vintage Volkswagen T1 Bulli whisked us through winding forest roads and picturesque countryside to a beautifully arranged picnic in the Black Forest. It was the sort of whimsical experience that felt straight out of a fairy tale.
Back at the hotel, nature remains central to the experience. Set beside the picturesque Lichtentaler Allee, with the River Oos flowing nearby, Brenners enjoys an idyllic location. We were blessed with glorious sunshine, perfect for exploring Baden-Baden's charming town centre, just a short walk away.
Dining is equally enchanting. The Wintergarten restaurant, with expansive windows overlooking manicured gardens, offers an elegant setting for leisurely meals, while Fritz & Felix provides a contemporary culinary experience.
Beyond its heritage, Brenners is also a wellness destination. Its Spa & Wellbeing facilities include a Roman-style swimming pool, sauna areas, fitness facilities and personalised treatments. At Villa Stéphanie, Brenners Medical Care, led by Dr Harry F. König and his colleagues, offers tailored programs covering preventative medicine, diagnostics, nutrition, sleep and longevity.
Yet beyond the history and exquisite interiors, what stayed with me most was the atmosphere. Brenners makes you want to dress up for dinner, simply because the surroundings deserve the occasion. Yet for all its grandeur, the genuine smiles, warm hospitality and attentive staff make you feel completely at home. Here, impeccable service feels effortless rather than rehearsed.
I arrived expecting a beautiful hotel and found myself slowing down, appreciating the little details and enjoying the rare pleasure of feeling transported to another time. For a few magical days, I hadn't just escaped to a fairy-tale destination. I had become part of the story.
